Tavernier double fires Rangers into League Cup final with win over Hearts

Philippe Clement will have a chance to win silverware for Rangers before Christmas, after Heart of Midlothian were swept aside in this League Cup semi-final. Clement, who succeeded Michael Beale last month, had cause to ponder how blissfully straightforward this was.

On paper, James Tavernier was key to Rangers’ win. The captain opened the scoring with a penalty and flicked home a free-kick for number three. However, closer inspection will show a shockingly negative Hearts display offered Rangers plenty of margin for error. Steven Naismith’s team took containment to new levels; as soon as Rangers broke the deadlock, the outcome looked a formality.
