Picking up a prescription from the surgery, I noticed some leaflets on hearing loss (‘Any embarrassment is in your head!’: How hearing aids boost your health and happiness, 13 November; Letters, 14 November). Aware that I’d been in denial, I phoned and got an appointment within a fortnight. The audiologist tested me, selected suitable aids and fitted them. I left the building with much better hearing, an instruction book, two packs of spare batteries and a follow-up date. No one asked me for as much as a penny piece.

I’m not so sure: the 10 biggest tracks of 2022 in the UK were all by British artists – the first time this has happened in the history of the charts.
