Jacob Brown strikes late to earn Luton vital victory over Crystal Palace

Everton’s pain is Luton’s gain. Though to take advantage of a rival’s point deduction there was a desperate need to start winning. After a hard-won 1-0 lead had been surrendered so rapidly, their manager, Rob Edwards, looked to the Bedfordshire skies in desolation. Teden Mengi’s goal had lifted the roof off, the celebrations had barely finished when Michael Olise scored his brilliant equaliser. In his first start of the season, with a goal that was all his own work, Olise had franked his reputation as one of English football’s prime talents.

But there was still time to find a winner, and Palace paid for their own lack of concentration when the outstanding Chiedozie Ogbene found space on the left and pinged the ball in. Jacob Brown, the second-half substitute, slid across Tyrick Mitchell to score.
