Eric Roy lost his most important player in the summer and had little money to sign a replacement, but Brest are flying high
By Adam White for Get French Football News
Having spent the last few years dodging relegation, it looked as if Brest might finally go down this season. As a small club in a congested area of north-west France, they trail Rennes, Nantes and even Lorient, Angers and Guingamp at times in the fight for fans and attention. Restricted by a small catchment area and resources, drifting between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 has become the norm.
So, when Ligue 1 was reduced to 18 clubs before this season, they looked in more danger than most. In their latest stint in the top flight, they have finished 14th, 17th, 11th and 14th. There have been some highlights since their promotion in 2019, but those finishes largely flatter the club.
