Indigenous leaders may wait until next year to propose a new agenda after the unsuccessful voice referendum, with some arguing privately there may need to be a renewal of leadership and more time for consultation.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has said the government wants to consult with Indigenous leaders before deciding on its next policy moves. But several sources from the yes campaign said they don’t want to rush into making major decisions, amid concerns that new policies proposed in the immediately after the referendum would be shot down.
