For the first time in as long as I can remember, I found myself baffled by a podcast this week. Namely, the audio debut of Fesshole: the wild tell-all X account where people send in their anonymous tales of outlandish behaviour. Its first episode saw its creator running down the 10 best confessions of the week – fine, an easy-to-understand format. And then, episode two was a lengthy, colourful interview with celeb fan and psychology expert Phillipa Perry, as she mused that the popularity of confessing to Fesshole might be because, in her words, it’s “maybe a little thing to wank to.” Was it a spin-off episode? Bonus content? And if not, then what exactly is the format of this show, I found myself wondering.

I was similarly unenlightened by going back to the trailer, where it promises that they’ll also have episodes interviewing people who’ve confessed, plus “a novelty gameshow episode”. I was also thrown by this week’s return to the listicle format, which seems to have introduced a totally new series of categories for the show (from “highest rated” to “just ones that make me laugh”). But the penny has since dropped: this is a podcast that is doing whatever the hell it likes – if not making it up as it goes along.
