Lee Carsley evaded questions over whether he wants the England job on a permanent basis after following a chaotic 2-1 defeat against Greece by suggesting that he would be happy to return to the under-21s when his interim role ends.
After a night of confusion on and off the pitch at Wembley, the waters were further muddied when Carsley made the surprising admission that he would “hopefully” soon be back in charge of the U21 side.
