Interim coach Tom Sermanni hands maiden call-up to Daniela GalicCortnee Vine to skip matches against Switzerland and Germany
A maiden call-up for rising star Daniela Galic headlines Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni’s first squad since taking the reins for a second time. But Sermanni has largely turned to experienced players based in Europe for friendlies against Switzerland in Zurich on 25 October and Germany in Duisburg on 28 October (local time), with few shocks in the 23-player squad.
Australia’s entire Olympics squad and reserve players, bar explosive winger Cortnee Vine and retired goalkeeper Lydia Williams, have been selected despite the disappointing campaign at Paris 2024. Women’s World Cup penalty shootout hero Vine has been left out of the squad due to personal reasons, after also making herself unavailable for the Olympic qualifiers against Uzbekistan in February.
