Dutch driver qualifies first for the ninth time this seasonOscar Piastri impresses and will also start on front row
Faint hopes that Red Bull and Max Verstappen could be vulnerable were summarily dashed to dramatic effect in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix. Verstappen delivered a blistering pole position, an epic run that left the opposition clawing fitfully in the air way to his rear. This was normal service for the world champion and his team resumed quite emphatically at Suzuka.
Verstappen’s pole lap with a time of 1minute 28.877 seconds was almost six-tenths of a second clear of the second-placed McLaren of Oscar Piastri, with his teammate Lando Norris in third. Piastri, a rookie taking his first front row start for a grand prix had put in an immense lap on a circuit he has never raced before to become only the fifth Australian to make the front row.
