Too often, people merely see podcasts as beginning and ending with the true crime genre. Frankly, it’s hard not to feel at times like that’s even true of those who make the shows, with the (now very long ago) success of the likes of Serial having established a template that’s all too easy for producers to fall back on. Indeed, a wild (and increasingly tiresome) number of true-crime podcasts are announced week in, week out. But podcasting is a medium unto itself, with strengths that – in many cases – can help it tell a story better than TV or film. And the genre’s greatest power? Showcasing an individual’s personality – be it a great host, an incredible interviewee or, God forbid, the subject of a knotty crime tale.
This week’s podcasts, at least, seem to have figured this out. We’ve got a highly personal series of tales, from a Manchester City defender and six-time Premier League champion sharing his thoughts on life to a chronicle of moving, complex tales of grandparents born on a different continent to their famous grandchildren. Brace for insight, character and charm.
